An Open Letter to Sarah, A Fellow Jewish Mother

Dear Sarah,

I find myself compelled to reach out to you today, a day after your father enacted a policy that effectively bars millions from entering our country. As you watch your children enjoy the simple pleasures of a playground—just as you did with your own mother, an immigrant—I’m left wondering how you can remain silent.

From your luxurious Manhattan home, you can see the very symbol of hope and freedom: Lady Liberty. What do these powerful words mean to you?

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

As a mother, a human being, and a member of the Jewish community, I implore you to reflect on the plea of Bana, the 7-year-old who reached out to your father for help with the Syrian crisis. Her words resonate deeply:

“Can you please save the children and people of Syria? You must do something for the children of Syria because they are like your children and deserve peace like you.”

On this poignant day, which follows Holocaust Remembrance Day, as you snuggle with your little ones in your elegant abode, what will you tell them about their grandfather’s actions that prevent those in need from pursuing the American dream? What will you share about their great-grandparents who endured the horrors of the Holocaust? How will you explain the fate of their great-great-aunt Miriam, who tragically lost her life during those dark times?

I write this letter as a fellow New Yorker of Jewish descent who feels increasingly powerless in the face of these decisions. Given your close proximity to the decision-maker, can’t you advocate for change, to ensure that history does not repeat itself?
