In a world where women united in cities across the globe to make their voices heard, one small fishing community proved that even a handful can create a significant impact. Sandy Cove, nestled in Nova Scotia, may only have 65 year-round residents, but the spirit of solidarity shone brightly during their very own Women’s March.
The inspiration for this heartwarming event came from 62-year-old Clara Thompson, a retired educator. Not wanting to drive two and a half hours to join the larger march in Halifax, Clara and her friend, Lisa, decided to take matters into their own hands. They created a Facebook event, expecting just the two of them and perhaps a few others to join them on their march down the local highway. To their surprise, the turnout was much greater than they anticipated.
A total of 15 people—almost a quarter of Sandy Cove’s population—joined Clara and Lisa, including Clara’s husband, Jack. With signs in hand and determination in their hearts, they set out to make a statement.
“It felt monumental, like we were part of something much bigger,” Clara shared in a conversation with a local publication. “We honestly thought it would just be Lisa and myself, but then more people started showing up. It was uplifting to see the community come together.”
While their march may have been a small-scale version compared to the massive gatherings in urban areas, the photos and videos shared online quickly gained traction. One clip from their event is nearing an impressive 250,000 views.
“It’s astonishing,” Clara remarked about the attention their tiny town is receiving. “It reminds you that you’re not isolated; there’s a whole world out there standing in solidarity with you.”
