As the New Year rolls around, many of us find ourselves making resolutions that often fade before we can even savor the first few days of January. Every year, I promise myself to get fit. And I do! For about three days anyway. Then life throws its curveballs—kids fall ill, laundry piles up, and before I know it, my fitness goals are shelved. I’m sure I’m not the only one who struggles with this. Parenting can be so consuming and chaotic that carving out time for our own ambitions becomes a monumental task.
This year, however, I’m adopting a resolution that’s not just achievable, but essential: I’m committing to engage my children in conversations about responsible alcohol consumption. Research indicates that parents wield significant influence over their kids’ choices regarding drinking—yes, we really do make a difference! Even though it may seem like our kids tune us out, they’re actually absorbing what we say. Initiating discussions about smart alcohol choices as early as age 6 is one of the most effective strategies for deterring underage drinking. It’s not just a one-off conversation; it’s an ongoing dialogue worth having.
I invite you to join me, alongside Responsibility.org and a community of committed bloggers, in this vital resolution. Let’s make it our mission to talk to our kids about alcohol. Unlike those fitness goals, this is one resolution we can all stick to. Who needs exercise when we can focus on conversations that matter?
As I reflect on the past year, it’s clear that it involved endless laundry, countless clean-ups, and, let’s be honest, a well-deserved (responsible) glass of wine at the end of the week. So here’s to hoping you can stay awake past 9 p.m. this New Year’s Eve!
