The color schemes of my childhood outfits could rival a painter’s palette. I have my parents to thank (or perhaps blame) for my eclectic wardrobe choices. They dressed me until I reached the age of 7, when I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands.

Recently, I stumbled upon a photograph from my preschool days. Picture this: I was clad in wide-wale, navy blue corduroys, a banana-yellow shirt adorned with brown cowboys, and a dark blue cardigan featuring bold red and orange vertical stripes. The evidence suggests my parents were living out their creative fashion visions through me. At the time, I thought it was just their quirky style.

Now, as a father of two—my eldest being five and my youngest still finding their way into the world—I understand what my parents knew: it’s a parent’s prerogative to dress their children however they please. Most days, my wife manages our daughter’s outfits, but occasionally, it’s my turn to take the reins.

I may not be a fashion expert, perhaps more of a “JCPenney-irregular-collection-inista,” but I compensate for my lack of style with a wealth of creativity. Throughout the school year, I’ve put together outfits that would make any preschooler say, “Wow, look at her!” One standout ensemble featured leopard-print tights, a tiger graphic tee, a fluffy white vest, chunky bracelets, and round, purple sunglasses. To complete the look, I added a necklace with a large key—symbolizing the unlocking of her potential to embrace her unique style.

Why a key, you ask? It serves as a metaphor for opening minds to the power of self-expression. In other words, it’s about instilling the confidence to be unapologetically herself, regardless of what others might think.

So, why does a guy who prefers worn-out tees dress his daughter as if she’s preparing for a fashion showdown? Well, primarily because I can. But it’s deeper than that. I’ve come to realize that my own childhood fashion experiences were not just whimsical—they were formative.

Dressing up with my daughter is a bonding experience that brings us joy. She admires herself in the mirror, walks tall, and beams with happiness on her way to school. It has taught her—and reminded me—to embrace boldness in life.

I know it’s “just clothes,” but I also understand that there will come a time when my daughter may not seek my advice on her wardrobe choices. For now, she’s my little model, and I’m her creative director. It’s an enjoyable journey, and I look forward to the day she can look back at these moments and either thank or blame me for her adventurous style choices.

And just wait until she sees the kindergarten collection I’ve curated for her!
