Your Baby Might Roll Off the Bed—And That’s Totally Normal

When my first child hit the nine-month mark, we embarked on an adventure to Ireland. We were apprehensive about the lengthy flight. Surprisingly, it went smoothly. We were also nervous about the long drives through the countryside, but they turned out to be just fine. However, we didn’t anticipate the potential chaos awaiting us in our hotel room, particularly with that king-sized bed.

It was the final stretch of our trip, and our little one had been a trooper. He didn’t sleep on the plane, but he didn’t scream either—just a curious little explorer, occasionally eliciting chuckles from fellow passengers. A win in my book! Yes, after landing and securing our rental car, he expressed his excitement with a massive blowout in the backseat, but hey, that’s just part of the journey, right?

And then, the inevitable happened: falling off the bed.

I had just placed our surprisingly well-behaved nine-month-old on that vast king-sized bed and stepped into the bathroom. I don’t even remember what I found amusing, as my mind went blank after calling my partner in to share a laugh. Just moments later, we heard a thud followed by a wail. Our child had rolled off the bed in a foreign land. There’s not enough Guinness to soothe those nerves.

When your baby takes a tumble from the bed, couch, or chair—or you’re the one who mistakenly thinks it’s okay to stand him up before he can even walk and then let go (true story, but don’t worry, it was a friend’s baby!)—you’re overwhelmed with anxiety and guilt. How joyous!

The immediate concerns flood in: Is his nose broken? Does he have a black eye? Could he have a concussion? Do babies even get concussions? How can I tell if he does?! And then the long-term worries creep in: Is he going to suffer brain damage? Will he develop any deformities? Will he join a gang of well-meaning misfits in the Pacific Northwest? Most of these fears, however, are unfounded—your little one will likely be just fine.

My son was perfectly okay. Fast forward nearly six years, and he’s still as lively as ever. If you measure wellness by how much of a handful a kid can be, then he’s thriving!

Chances are, when your baby takes a tumble, he’ll emerge unscathed as well. Those adorable little heads are surprisingly resilient. Thankfully, most parents have faced this little mishap at some point. Kids are quick—both in how fast they can move when you turn your back and in their rapid development from immobile infants to wild little daredevils. Luckily, evolution equipped them with soft, pliable heads to help them avoid serious injury.

As for us parents? We don’t get off that easily. The day our baby took a dive from that Irish bed, we were anything but fine. Not for a few hours, at least (or a few pints).

Even now, six years later, we faced the same scenario when baby number two tumbled off the bed—not once, but twice! But he’s perfectly okay too. Judging by his endless grin, he’s not just fine; he’s positively euphoric. The little guy is so cheerful it’s almost concerning… maybe we should get him checked out.
