To the New Wave of Feminists

I’ve been reflecting on how to reach out to you, knowing how deeply disheartened many of you must feel right now. While I may not have all the right words, I wanted to take a moment before the day wraps up to share my thoughts.

The part of me that has long championed women’s rights feels like a resentful little gremlin today. This gremlin is overwhelmed by the persistent shadow of misogyny, feeling that no amount of merit or capability can outweigh the disdain toward a woman in power. It doesn’t matter that one candidate was indeed more knowledgeable and qualified. It doesn’t matter that any mistakes she made were insignificant compared to those of her opponent, who embodies sexism and racism. Ultimately, what mattered most was that she was a woman who dared to know too much—she had to be put in her place.

I understand that many will argue her loss was about more than just gender. However, I firmly believe that had she been male, with the same qualifications and shortcomings, she would have won decisively.

So here I am, feeling that familiar bitterness.

This is the reality for many feminists in the wake of this setback. We’re grappling with disappointment and an unsettling sense of fear. But as someone who has navigated the complexities of feminism for years, I’ve learned that the only option is to move forward. That’s the path ahead.

When faced with obstacles—of which I’m sure there will be many—you must allow that gremlin to voice its grievances for a moment, then push onward.

I can’t dictate what that will look like for each of you. Perhaps it means continuing to inspire and educate those around you. Maybe it involves advocating for women candidates in local elections. Or attending rallies—there are sure to be plenty of those on the horizon.

In these initial moments, it’s about finding the strength to keep moving, even when the hurt is fresh. It’s challenging, especially with the noise from those who support the opposing side. Remaining gracious in the midst of such turmoil is no easy feat. Yet, it will become more manageable with time. Your life will regain its rhythm, and that gremlin will gradually ease its grip on your spirit.

The upcoming years may not be smooth sailing. I don’t have a concrete strategy for navigating the storm ahead, but I refuse to let it envelop me, and you shouldn’t either. I endured the challenges of the Nixon and Reagan eras—it’s possible to persevere.

I recognize how painful those first few days and weeks can be. I want you to understand that it will improve. You young women represent the future, and ultimately, there will be no stopping you. Take in the blow, but remember that your time will come. This is what we seasoned feminists are counting on.
