It’s no secret that many of us are feeling a profound sense of loss—loss of words, loss of hope, and even a loss of faith. The weight of uncertainty can be overwhelming; I’ve felt helpless, frustrated, and scared for the future. My heart aches not only for myself but for my children and for all marginalized communities. I worry for my friends who practice Islam and for anyone who has ever experienced trauma at the hands of someone in power. It’s a deeply unsettling time, and it’s natural to feel devastated.
It may seem too soon to look for a silver lining, but we must try. The grieving process can be lengthy, and many of us may find ourselves stuck in anger or denial. However, we must push ourselves to move forward. The future of our children and families is at stake, and while we might wish we could hide under the covers away from social media and the harsh realities of our current situation, we simply can’t afford to do so. We must awaken to the challenges that lie ahead.
Unity is essential now more than ever. As a collective, we must rise above the hatred that seeks to divide us. It’s imperative that we stand together as mothers, professionals, advocates, and educators. This administration has been traumatic for many, particularly for those in vulnerable communities, which calls for us to be allies. We must support our Muslim brothers and sisters and continue to advocate for movements like “Black Lives Matter” and “Our Bodies, Our Choice.” If you can, contribute to these causes, listen to each other, and prioritize safety and understanding. We must model progressive values for the next generation.
I understand that this may sound idealistic; it’s certainly easier said than done. Yet, I believe in the power of reframing—a therapeutic concept that encourages us to look at difficult situations from a different perspective. This approach can help us uncover positive outcomes, even in challenging times. So, I’m choosing to reframe my viewpoint, because I believe it’s necessary. I refuse to spread negativity and hate. I want to nurture my children’s hearts to remain open and loving, while also giving them the strength to face the harsh realities of life.
While it’s easy to focus on the darkness, we must also acknowledge the beauty that exists in our world and the goodness in people. We need to rely on each other and support one another. This is truly a test of our resilience. The question now is: Where do we go from here? We move forward by continuing to spread love and positivity, regardless of who holds power in our government. I refuse to let that shape my worldview. Together, we can overcome this and learn valuable lessons along the way—staying hopeful even when it’s difficult.
I know it may feel premature to shift our mindset, but we can do this. We must stand united. Let’s reframe our perspective for the better.
