A Husband nursery should be a standard feature in every mall, don’t you think? Husbands can be a handful, especially when it comes to shopping. Thankfully, a brilliant idea has emerged: a dedicated husband nursery located inside a mall in Shanghai.
The Vanke Mall recently opened its “husband nursery,” and it has taken the internet by storm as a clever solution to the age-old dilemma of shopping with your partner. Ever been followed around by your husband, who constantly insists “you don’t need that”? If we were in China, we’d be able to leave our significant others behind to leisurely ponder that wrap dress or whatever else is on our wishlist.
The husband nursery is designed with comfort in mind, offering various amenities to keep your partner entertained while you indulge in retail therapy. There are tables and chairs for enjoying a meal or reading a book, a TV for entertainment, and even a fridge. One lucky early bird can relax in the massage chair, making the waiting experience a bit more enjoyable. Although the decor may be minimal, for those who dislike shopping, a comfy chair and a phone might be all they need to survive their partner’s shopping spree. While it may not be as elaborate as an American man cave, it certainly has enough to keep the non-shoppers occupied.
The name “husband nursery” might sound a bit off, given that our spouses are not children (even if they sometimes act like it). In Chinese, it translates more accurately to “husband storage room,” as reported by Mashable. Images of this unique space have circulated on Weibo, China’s Twitter equivalent, garnering mostly positive reactions. One user humorously asked, “Is there a wife nursery? I don’t like shopping,” but as of now, there are no plans for one. We can only imagine the husbands who find themselves in this sanctuary wouldn’t mind sharing it with equally disinterested wives.
However, don’t expect to see many ladies in this husband haven. Research indicates that on average, men lose interest in shopping after just 26 minutes. In contrast, women can last about two hours before feeling bored, according to Psychology Today. Furthermore, 80 percent of men dislike shopping with their partners, and 45 percent actively avoid it whenever possible.
Thus, having a designated area for men who would rather not accompany their wives shopping makes perfect sense. If you have a full day planned but must stop at the mall, just drop off your partner and pick him up later—no more squabbles in the towel section of department stores. The husband nursery might just be the best shopping innovation since the rise of online stores. A little beer or wine would make it a perfect addition to malls in America.
