Hey America, Your Canadian Friends Are Anxious About You

Hello, America! It’s your friendly neighbor to the north, Canada.

Can we have a moment to discuss something? There’s been quite a bit of commotion coming from your direction lately — in fact, it seems to have been building for a whole year. We understand that you’re in the midst of an election, and the noise usually ramps up as the date approaches. Normally, we don’t mind the ruckus; in fact, we often find it entertaining to watch. We just wrapped up our own elections not too long ago. Did you catch that? Just kidding — we know you probably didn’t.

You might have noticed our new Prime Minister, though? Much like the previous U.S. President, he’s an advocate for women’s rights, has a good sense of humor, and enjoys surfing. He even pops up in the background of wedding photos! Plus, he bases his policies on solid evidence — you’d think that would be standard practice, but here we are.

This brings us to the heart of our conversation: leadership. You might not care much about Prime Minister Thorne (we made that name up), and that’s okay, as it’s your choice. After all, we don’t call ourselves “The Leader Of The Free World.” However, you do. The decisions made in your country have repercussions that ripple across the globe. Generally, this isn’t a huge worry for us. We tend to lean more progressive, so we were supportive of President Obama. We would have been okay with a President McCain or President Romney, too.

But here’s the catch: one of your political parties has nominated a candidate who genuinely frightens us, making us question the future of our planet as we hurtle through the void of space.

And we’re not alone in our concerns. Other nations are watching your election closely as well. There are whispers in Eastern Europe about whether you’ll honor your commitments, especially with a candidate who seems to view long-standing alliances as mere bargaining chips. Japan is feeling jittery too because this same candidate has hinted at leaving them with nuclear weapons as a parting gift. Just the other day, he called the Philippines a “terrorist nation,” and we are still scratching our heads over that one.

We’ve heard that your candidate has a rather simplistic view on using nuclear weapons to resolve complex issues, and that’s a significant concern for the rest of us. We all want to see our children grow, thrive, and lead fulfilling lives—not to be left in a blasted, desolate landscape.

Additionally, your candidate seems oblivious to the fact that eight other countries possess nuclear capabilities. Some of those nations can be unpredictable, especially when an American presidential candidate begins cozying up to adversaries and threatens trade wars with nuclear-armed states.

So, come on, America. We’re close enough that we feel we can be honest with you. We know you have the potential to be better than this.

Warm regards,
Your Concerned Neighbors from the North
