Tales From Our Journey: No Longer a House Divided

It was a memorable day during the Michigan primary when my partner, Alex, found himself in downtown Detroit. While leaving a local bakery, he witnessed two black SUVs swiftly block off the street. With his background in the military, he quickly deduced that a security detail was on-site – and that meant a candidate was nearby. Just moments later, he turned back into the bakery, narrowly escaping the Secret Service’s lockdown. Inside, he was one of only a handful of patrons.

Before long, Hillary Rodham Clinton herself walked into the bakery, taking the time to engage with each person present. She listened intently, asked thoughtful questions, and truly connected with those around her. Alex, on his way to a job interview as a UAV pilot, found himself in a conversation with her about FAA regulations. She inquired about how she could advocate for clearer and more reasonable guidelines in the industry. After their chat, she wished him luck for his interview, and he returned the sentiment for hers.

When he called me afterward, I could hear the emotion in his voice. He was visibly moved by her kindness and genuineness, and he couldn’t help but think about the future for our daughters and how her presidency could impact their lives and aspirations.

Alex had previously met Bill Clinton during his service and even had a chance to converse with Bernie Sanders during his time in Vermont. He reflected on the stark contrasts between these encounters. With Hillary, he felt seen and valued.

It was a moment of transformation for him. No longer were we a house divided; we became united supporters of Hillary Clinton.
