I reflect on the journey of my grandmother, who faced discrimination in Florida during the Jim Crow era, often being turned away from restaurants and restrooms due to the color of her skin. Today, I see the same struggle with my son, who, despite his father’s fair skin and blue eyes, was born with beautiful dark skin and tight, curly hair. Adults frequently question him about his appearance, emphasizing the difference between him and his lighter-skinned sisters, even though they share the same features.
We must shift our perspective and stop categorizing each other by color. I want my children to grow up in a world where they aren’t confined to boxes that serve someone else’s comfort. My two incredible daughters are destined to make a difference in this world, and they certainly don’t need anyone’s approval to shine.
As a 43-year-old woman with blue hair, married to a lifelong Republican who, despite his reluctance, stands by my side through this election, I feel a blend of hope and fear. I grew up as the child of young parents who relied on food assistance and lived in modest circumstances. Now I find myself in the top 1% of earners, yet I will always remember that a person’s worth is not determined by their financial status but by their drive and passion. Everyone deserves a chance.
Despite the fact that most of my friends are supporting a candidate for tax benefits, I remain hopeful that deep down, they also support someone who aligns with their values. I’m choosing to embrace hope and love over hate, judgment, and division. I truly believe that a woman can lead us into a brighter future, and while I fight the fear of jinxing her success, I want to be clear: I stand by her side.
I. Stand. With. Her.
