Every so often, a story from our past emerges that resonates deeply, especially when it comes to the women who paved the way for us. I want to share my own tale about pantsuits, inspired by my mother—a remarkable woman who achieved so much despite the odds stacked against her.
My mother was not only stunning but also exceptionally talented. She graduated as Valedictorian from her high school at just 16. However, when it came time for college, her brother was prioritized for financial support, leading her to secretarial school instead. Later, she pursued her passion as a professional actress but returned to Delaware to embrace motherhood. Once my sister and I were both in school full-time, she re-entered the workforce, taking on the role of executive secretary for the newly established Delaware State Arts Council, working right in downtown Wilmington.
I vividly recall a chilly February day when my father came to take her out for lunch. As she stood from her desk, I remember her proudly wearing a pantsuit instead of the traditional skirt. To my surprise, he turned on his heel and walked out, refusing to be seen in public with a woman dressed in slacks. It’s a memory that has stuck with me, a poignant reminder of the societal norms that women have battled through the decades.
Years have passed since that incident, yet I can still picture the hurt on her face as she recounted the story. Her strength has always inspired me, and today, I refuse to feel shame about pantsuits or any attire that empowers women to express themselves.
Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to say that two of my sons and my daughter have already cast their votes for Hillary. My partner and I will join them on Tuesday. It’s a testament to how far we’ve come and how we continue to break barriers.
