In a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, the comedian showcased his infamous Halloween candy prank, where parents share videos of themselves pretending to have eaten their children’s hard-earned Halloween treats. While many find these clips amusing, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness for those kids.

As I watched the prank unfold, I was struck by how uncomfortable it made me. I found myself anxiously checking the time, thinking, “There are still four minutes left of this?!” My fluffy companion, a 14-pound Pekingese named Max, could sense my frustration but, unfortunately, couldn’t fetch me a drink.

With the exception of the young boy dressed as a T-Rex—who seemed unfazed by the prank—my heart went out to the rest of the kids. Pranks should be lighthearted and fun, especially when directed at adults. How do you even prank a three-year-old? These little ones still believe in magical creatures and think beloved TV shows depict reality. They trust their parents implicitly.

To an adult, the candy may not seem that significant (except for Kit Kats, which are truly essential). But to children, Halloween is a monumental occasion—a day filled with costumes and candy galore! Why would parents want to tarnish that joy?

I usually don’t take these things too seriously, but for some reason, these prank videos hit a nerve. These children deserve better than to be the butt of a joke. When parents tell their kids they’ve eaten all the candy, they may think, “Look at how upset my child will be! That’s hilarious!” But for the kids, that disappointment feels all too real.

After such a prank, do you really think the children will say, “Good one, Mom and Dad! Let’s laugh about this over some chicken nuggets!”? More likely, they’ll feel relieved to still have some candy but hurt that their parents would play a cruel joke at their expense.

The silver lining in these videos is the kids who respond with such grace, saying, “That’s okay. I still love you.” Those moments are heart-wrenching, demonstrating a level of kindness that’s often missing from the adults behind the camera. I wish I could gather all those kids, give them heaps of candy, and maybe even a puppy that loves to chew on car keys. Sounds like a funny scenario, doesn’t it?

In summary, while Jimmy Kimmel’s prank videos may be entertaining for some, they often miss the mark when it comes to the feelings of children. Parents should think twice before engaging in these antics that can lead to real hurt for their little ones.
