If you’ve ever crossed paths with me, “soccer mom” is probably the last label you’d slap on me. My background is in art, I’m a total bookworm, and many would describe me as a homesteading, free-spirited mom. But now that my child has joined our local sports roster for fall activities, I proudly embrace my role as a soccer mom.
Every Saturday morning, I haul the whole family over to the town recreation center to watch my oldest learn the ins and outs of dribbling and kicking. Surrounding me are various moms engaging in their own ways. There’s the one who sits quietly in a chair, scrolling through social media, the volunteer coach passionately shouting instructions, and the PTA mom chatting it up with her fellow committee members.
And then there’s me.
I’m the mom who cheers enthusiastically for every child on the field, not just my own. These kids, ranging from kindergarten to second grade, are in the early stages of forming friendships, mastering shoe-tying, and learning that the big net is a goal and not a secret fort, as some boys mischievously thought last week.
I’m the mom who relishes the chance to bring fun snacks for the team, even though it’s not required (and probably annoys a few of the other parents). I arrive with a backpack packed with treats, Band-Aids, extra water, baby wipes, and sunscreen. No one asks for these supplies, but I believe in being prepared.
I’m also the mom who actively seeks to connect with other parents, including the quieter ones. It’s in my nature to be curious, so why not take this chance to get to know the folks behind my child’s friendships?
And yes, I’m the mom who has no qualms about speaking up when overzealous parents yell at the coaches. Seriously, let’s keep it real. These volunteer coaches are doing their best, and these kids are too young and inexperienced for parents to be causing a scene. So, let’s all take a breath and chill out.
I’m also the mom who is more than willing to support a child who missed a goal and is clearly upset. These little ones are still learning, and I believe in cheering for everyone. I’m not advocating for participation trophies, but we can surely agree to celebrate all kids, right? Their effort and teamwork count.
I’m the mom who tells my child (and likely yours as well) to dial it back when they start picking on others about speed, skill, or cool cleats. This is a group of kids figuring out how to work together and exhibit good sportsmanship. A little friendly competition is great, but being mean is not.
So there you have it: I’m a proud soccer mom. I adore the game and the kids—yours and mine. You’ll find me on the sidelines, chatting with other moms, cheering for both teams, and upholding the belief that sports can teach our children to be respectful and responsible individuals who can learn to have faith in themselves, just as we have faith in them. In summary, I embrace being the enthusiastic soccer mom who supports all kids on the field, fosters connections among parents, and believes in the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.
