The Fuller Cut, located in Ypsilanti, offers children a two-dollar discount—or cash reward—if they read aloud during their haircut. This initiative goes beyond just improving reading skills; it also helps boost children’s confidence. “Every time a child holds a book, there’s an opportunity for success,” Carter noted. “You can see the pride on their faces once they finish reading. And, of course, the two dollars doesn’t hurt either.”

The response from parents, children, and educators has been overwhelmingly positive. “Parents and teachers have embraced it,” said Carter. “Kids come in with varying abilities. Some find reading easy, while others might be hesitant or struggle. We motivate everyone to give it a shot.”

Since its inception in August 2015, the Read to Your Barber program has been gaining attention, and the barbershop is eager to continue its mission.
