“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
Today marks our son, Theo’s first birthday. What a remarkable milestone! I vividly recall the moment I first laid eyes on him — small, wailing, full of life — and that overwhelming sense of wonder filled my heart. It’s a feeling that forever etches itself into your memory.
I’ve embraced Emerson’s wisdom throughout my life, and it feels almost poetic that Theo came into this world to chart his own unique course. Diagnosed at birth with achondroplasia, the most prevalent form of dwarfism, Theo’s journey has already begun in ways we didn’t anticipate.
Parenthood is filled with a series of firsts: the first smile, the first hug, the initial shared laugh, and the moment he tosses a ball back at you. Initially, I thought I would be the one teaching him countless lessons. However, over this past year, it’s been Theo who has imparted invaluable lessons to me about unconditional love, the essence of joy, and the unexpected blessings life can offer.
Three Profound Lessons from Theo
On this special day, I want to share three profound lessons that Theo has taught me:
- Embrace Individuality.
Every person is a unique tapestry of experiences and characteristics. While many of us share common milestones—like crawling, joining a sports team, or making friends—Theo’s journey reminds me that he will carve out his own narrative. Perhaps instead of competing on a traditional soccer team, he may shine in the Paralympics. His condition has illuminated a path of uniqueness that we may not have explored otherwise. - Acceptance of the Unconventional Path.
As a parent, it is tempting to wish for your child to achieve milestones sooner, better, or in a more conventional manner than their peers. I’ve had moments of envy and anxiety, especially when comparing Theo to other children. Watching kids ride bikes or hearing well-meaning inquiries about developmental milestones can stir up unwanted emotions. Yet, observing Theo’s determination as he army crawls across the floor in a surprisingly graceful manner has opened my eyes to the beauty of his different path. Each of his accomplishments is a testament to his creativity and problem-solving abilities. - Live Fully and Create Your Legacy.
Theo radiates joy. His laughter is contagious, and his curiosity about the world around him is inspiring. As adults, we often allow societal expectations to cloud our experiences, causing us to overlook life’s simple joys. I aspire for Theo to maintain this purity of spirit as he grows. He teaches me to celebrate life’s small victories and to relish every moment.
Life becomes extraordinary when you write your own story and forge your own path. The tales that diverge from the norm are often the most special. Happy birthday, Theo. Thank you for the incredible gifts you’ve given me this year; I hope to reciprocate in kind.
A shoutout to my wonderful partner, Emma, for her support with this reflection. Theo and I are truly fortunate to have you in our lives.
