My Child Is A Rule-Breaker, But Perhaps That’s A Blessing in Disguise

As a new mom, I found myself dreading those Mommy and Me classes. It wasn’t the overly enthusiastic instructor or the childish games that irked me. No, it was circle time that sent me over the edge, ultimately earning us the title of Mommy and Me Dropouts.

Circle time became my personal nightmare, distracting me from the joy of motherhood and making me question my parenting skills. I often found myself asking, “What am I doing wrong?” While the other children sat quietly on their parents’ laps, engaged in songs and clapping, my son was racing around the gym, exploring every corner, ignoring the rules I desperately tried to instill. Circle time rules? He had his own agenda.

Fast forward a decade, and that spirited toddler is still forging his own path, with his younger brother following suit. They constantly challenge boundaries, seeking loopholes in every situation. A fence to them isn’t a barrier; it’s an invitation to climb over it. And while their adventurous spirit drives me to distraction, it also makes me rethink the value of their rule-breaking behaviors.

Embracing Independence

Raising independent, strong-willed children is no small feat. It’s frustrating, exhausting, and often leaves me pulling my hair out. I find myself saying “no” more times than I can count, wishing for a moment of peace. Sometimes, I envy friends with their well-behaved kids—those who wait for a cue before darting off or who cautiously stay within the confines of their backyard. I’ve often screamed internally, “Why can’t you just follow the rules?”

But lately, I’ve started to rethink this perspective. Perhaps their rebellious nature isn’t something to stifle but a trait that could serve them well in the future. During a recent family trip to Yosemite, my son learned about the endangered status of grizzly bears in California. He started brainstorming ways to protect and reintroduce these majestic creatures. His ideas were often outlandish, and as a rule-follower myself, I initially dismissed them.

However, as I watched him and his brother explore the mountains, chasing adventure without looking back, it hit me: the fearless and curious mindset they possess could lead to incredible things. The innovators and change-makers often come from the ranks of those who dare to disrupt the status quo. Instead of adhering strictly to established norms, they ask, “Why not?” and forge new paths.

The Value of Rule-Breaking

Many remarkable discoveries and advancements arose from individuals daring to break the mold or challenge the rules. Sometimes these risks lead to failure, but other times they yield extraordinary results. Watching my children venture into the unknown ignited a realization in me: perhaps I should embrace their adventurous spirit rather than stifle it.

Most days, my wild children make me want to scream, cry, or even pull my hair out. Yet, in moments of reflection, I see the potential for adventure, discovery, and confidence in them—qualities I genuinely desire for myself too.
