Dear Child,
Tomorrow marks the start of a new school year. Second grade — how incredible is that? I know you’re not thrilled about returning to the classroom. You’d much rather be outside playing baseball or kicking a soccer ball with your friends. You’d prefer to spend your time sorting your sports cards or diving into the pool one more time.
You might want to binge-watch movies filled with superheroes and fantastical worlds, or hunt for cool rocks and bugs under the porch. Riding your bike, enjoying popsicles, and swimming in the lake with your cousins all seem way more appealing than heading back to school after an exciting summer.
But here we are, summer has waved goodbye, and school is back in session. I’m genuinely excited for you. Knowing you’ve had a summer filled with adventure fills my heart with joy, but it’s time to embrace this new chapter.
Before we jump into this transition, let’s take a moment to share some important truths — secrets that you must always carry with you.
The First Secret
The first secret is that superheroes exist beyond the pages of your books and the screens of your games. They are all around us, from the people walking on the street to those shopping at Target. Lucky for you, you get to be around a superhero almost every day! Your teacher embodies the spirit of a superhero, equipped with an invisible cape of patience and a bag full of incredible lessons about math, science, reading, and kindness.
Real superheroes are those who make a positive impact in others’ lives. That’s your teacher and all the educators you’ll meet. So, treat them with kindness, listen attentively, and lend a helping hand. By doing so, you empower them — and in turn, you become a superhero yourself.
The Second Secret
The second secret is this: when challenges arise — and they will — remember that taking a few deep breaths can help ease the burden. You are compassionate, lively, and sociable. Like me, you might feel emotions intensely. It’s okay to cry and feel overwhelmed.
When faced with difficulties — whether it’s a tough homework assignment or a conflict with a friend — remember that you’re never truly alone. Your dad and I are always in your corner, supporting you through every moment. You carry our love and hopes with you, even if it feels like a tiny piece of lint in your pocket. So, when life gets tough, breathe deeply, and listen to your heart. You’ll know what to do.
The Third Secret
Now, here’s the third secret, and it’s possibly the most crucial one: that magic you experienced this summer? It’s not going anywhere. In fact, the magic is within you.
What do your dad and I always say? Be the best version of yourself. You don’t need to compete with others; just focus on being the best ‘you’ that you can be. While it may be challenging, if you take those deep breaths and listen to your heart, I have faith in you. By being kind, brave, and true to yourself, you’ll spread that magic to others.
School isn’t just about learning math or reading; it’s about growing, experiencing, and sharing your unique magic with the world.
So don’t worry, second grade is going to be fantastic! You’ll discover new things, meet amazing people, and yes, even more superheroes. Be kind, be attentive, and above all, be a spreader of magic.
And remember, I’m always thinking of you, missing you, and loving you throughout your day.
xoxo,
Mom
