In a recent Facebook post, blogger Jenna Moore laid bare a frustrating truth that resonates with many parents: the glaring double standard in how society views the roles of mothers and fathers. It’s no secret that mothers often face harsh scrutiny while fathers receive praise for simply showing up.
Jenna’s experience is a perfect example. After a visit to a local park, she found herself changing her son’s diaper on the grass due to the lack of facilities. Soon after, a self-appointed critic approached her, chastising her for the choice. Fast forward to the following week when her partner, Mark, did the exact same thing. Instead of criticism, he was met with applause from passersby for his “heroic” act of parenting.
“I didn’t think much of it at first,” Jenna shared. “I’ve grown accustomed to being judged for actions that my husband is celebrated for. It’s a common scenario: I pick the kids up from school and get the side-eye for being late, while Mark receives a round of applause for showing up.”
Jenna pointed out the societal tendency to place immense pressure on mothers to be perfect and selfless while maintaining minimal expectations for fathers. This double standard is eerily similar to the way participation trophies are handed out, where fathers are lauded for basic parenting activities that mothers are expected to do without acknowledgment. It’s frustrating and, quite frankly, unfair.
“People often complain about participation trophies for kids, but have you ever noticed how dads get them all the time?” Jenna remarked. “Every little thing a dad does is celebrated, while mom’s efforts often go unnoticed. It’s as if society believes paternal instinct is nonexistent, requiring every fatherly action to be a cause for celebration.”
Jenna isn’t suggesting we stop acknowledging dads for their contributions. “I love seeing Mark recognized for his role as a father. He’s amazing, and he deserves that recognition. But let’s not forget to uplift each other, too. When you see a mom multitasking at the park, recognize her choice to be there as an act of dedication,” she implored.
In essence, the call is for more recognition and less judgment across the board. What’s good for one should also apply to the other. We need to celebrate the efforts of all parents, regardless of gender.
