Christmas Holiday Stress? Not This Year!

I ventured out yesterday to grab a pair of swim goggles, thinking it would be a straightforward task. The sun was blazing, it was still summer, and children were running about in their swimsuits as the sun lingered well past 9 PM. Surely, I’d find what I needed without a hitch.

But as I roamed the aisles filled with inflatable pool toys and beach shovels, I was met with an unexpected sight that filled me with anxiety — a vibrant red and green gift bag of holiday stress, slapping me right in my sunblock-covered face.

Rather than swimming gear, I was greeted by shelves overflowing with composition notebooks, art supplies, and shiny lunch boxes. Just a few steps away, a clerk was stocking Halloween decorations, while in the next aisle, another was assembling an artificial Christmas tree. Seriously, what is going on?

We’re still months away from the jolly man in the red suit, yet here I am, already feeling the weight of Christmas stress. And don’t even get me started on the craft stores — one moment, they’re brimming with 4th of July decorations, and the next, it’s like stepping into a winter wonderland. Even my Pinterest feed is a mess, filled with Elf on the Shelf ideas before the pumpkins have even made their appearance.

Can we just pause for a moment? I’m not ready for this holiday rush, and it feels like Christmas is sneaking up on us faster than ever before. It seems that as soon as school begins, we’re bombarded with reminders that the holiday season is just around the corner. Last year, I received my first Christmas card the day after Thanksgiving! How is that even possible?

I can’t help but notice that for many of us, the entire holiday to-do list often lands squarely on our shoulders. The shopping, cooking, planning, and hosting — it all seems to fall to the moms, and it’s happening way too early. I used to feel the pressure to create the perfect holiday experience just a few days before Christmas, but now, I’m mentally drafting lists in the middle of summer, while grilling hot dogs!

This year, I’m declaring a moratorium on holiday stress. I’m taking a stand to fully embrace one season at a time. I’ll savor the last moments of summer with my kids, enjoying our popsicles without a thought to the upcoming holidays until I’m genuinely ready. I’m avoiding any holiday decorations or shopping until the temperatures drop below 40 degrees, and I refuse to even think about Christmas until my autumn decorations are put away.

So let’s band together, fellow moms! Join me in resisting the urge to dive into holiday madness far too early. Stressing over things months in advance? Not this year, my friends.
