What You Might Not Realize When You Critique This Image of My Daughter

This is my daughter, and yes, those are her nipples. Take a moment to digest that.

Yes, you heard me right. My daughter. Her nipples. I’ll pause here while you gather your thoughts, whether it’s to fume, gawk, or express some other inappropriate reaction.

Finished? Good. Let’s get to the heart of the matter.

First off, let’s be honest—nipples are a part of life. You’ve likely encountered them in various forms, from the innocent days of breastfeeding to more risqué settings like adult films or even at venues like Hooters. And let’s not even start on the plethora of male nipples we see every day at the beach or in advertisements. Yet, it seems that only women’s nipples become the subject of shame and scrutiny. This is just another way society keeps women…covered, hushed, and rendered less-than. A modern twist on an archaic tradition.

But let’s steer back to the image in question. My daughter isn’t making a statement about gender norms or pushing any boundaries. She simply doesn’t care what you think about her body. This photograph isn’t about you at all. Her boyfriend, the talented photographer and graphic designer, Lucas Patel, didn’t capture this moment to provoke or to flaunt her. Rather, he took this photo because she embraces every part of herself—her strong arms, her toned physique, her vibrant pink hair, and those striking blue eyes. It’s a snapshot of her essence, and that’s what makes it powerful.

Let me reiterate: this is not for you. It’s not about you. So let’s set aside your ego for a second.

When I look at this photo, I see a remarkable young woman who has learned to appreciate her body beyond what most can imagine. She faced a stroke that took away her ability to use her left side, along with her capacity to communicate and move freely. She fought through countless hours of physical and occupational therapy, enduring painful surgeries and procedures to reclaim her body. She has earned the right to feel proud of who she is.

I also see a woman who has bravely survived assault, standing strong against those who tried to belittle her. She’s saying “enough is enough” and “I will not live in fear.”

When I look at this photo, I recognize her journey from battling an eating disorder that nearly took away her strength to embracing her vibrant, solid form again. She is present, confident, and comfortable in her own skin.

Living on the West Coast, she makes conscious choices about her body. In a place where going braless is often considered the norm, she chooses freedom over societal constraints.

So when you look at this photo and see only…nipples? Perhaps it’s time to examine your own issues. Or maybe you do recognize her strength, and that frightens you.

There’s a shift happening, a storm named Mack, and she’s carving out her own path, unbothered by the opinions of others. I suggest you don’t stand in her way.

Just so you know, my daughter encouraged me to share this piece, and I did so with her full permission. It’s written in a way that speaks to anyone who views her image with judgment—if that’s you, so be it. If not, all the better. This piece was inspired by a man who felt compelled to tell my daughter that this beautiful photo was inappropriate. To him, and anyone else thinking similarly, I say, Namaste.
