The IDGAF Friendship Manifesto

At first glance, our friendship might raise some eyebrows. We may not see eye to eye on politics or religion, and our backgrounds could be worlds apart. Our chats might consist mostly of text messages, emails, and the odd phone call, rather than face-to-face meetups. We might even come from different walks of life, residing in different cities, or even countries. But at the end of the day, none of this matters because true friendship transcends these differences. There are simply things I don’t give a fig about when it comes to our camaraderie.

What You Feed Your Family

For starters, I don’t care what you feed your family. Whether your kids are on an all-organic diet or are allowed to devour Cheez Doodles daily, it’s your choice. If family dinners are a one-size-fits-all affair or if you’re whipping up 17 different meals for picky eaters, that’s totally fine by me. Just don’t raise an eyebrow at my pantry stocked with Pop Tarts and Pringles, or preach to me about the virtues of juicing — that’s just not happening in my world.

Your Professional Life

Your professional life? Not my concern. Whether you’re a working mom, a stay-at-home parent, or involved in some other job title that complicates things, I’m not bothered. What matters is that we can both vent about how challenging our respective lives are—whether you’re balancing conference calls or playdates—because what’s friendship for if not to share a good ol’ venting session?

Your Home and Vehicle

And don’t even get me started on your home or your vehicle. I’m not worried about whether your living room is spotless with vacuum lines or strewn with toys and snacks. The only thing that matters is whether I need to take my shoes off when I step into your place. A good friend knows the rules of their home, and that’s what friendship is all about.

Parenting Styles

When it comes to parenting styles, I’m not here to judge. Whether you co-sleep, use cloth diapers, or have never left your kids for more than two hours, that’s your business. What I care about is your kindness toward my children and your respect for my choices, even if they differ from yours. If you’re the Judgmental type, it might be time to hop off that high horse.

Political, Religious, or Cultural Views

Your political, religious, or cultural views? Not a priority for me. Whether you’re glued to the Real Housewives or NPR, what truly matters is if we can unwind together over a tub of cookie dough and a box of cheap wine while reliving the magic of Dirty Dancing. I don’t mind if you attend church regularly or read the New York Times every Sunday, as long as your beliefs are rooted in understanding and goodwill.

Character Over Differences

In the end, it all boils down to your character. As I mature, I find I have fewer cares to spare, reserving them for what truly counts: your concern for me, your timely responses, and your unwavering support—regardless of our differences. I value your effort in our friendship and whether I can trust you when life gets messy.

Authenticity in Friendship

Can we share secrets? Can we cry and complain in front of each other? Friendship takes a bit of grit and a splash of vulnerability. It’s about being real and authentic with one another, letting each other see behind the curtain without fear of judgment. And yes, a few good stories and inside jokes certainly don’t hurt!

In summary, friendship is about connection, understanding, and the ability to be ourselves without pretense. It’s about being there for each other through thick and thin, and sharing the beautiful chaos of life together.
