6 Reasons I’m Embracing My Midlife Journey

When I hit the milestone of 35, something shifted within me. I began prioritizing myself, and as a result, motherhood—and life in general—became significantly more manageable. Now at 37, I’m confidently striding into my forties with a newfound mantra of “I do what I want.” If this is what a midlife crisis entails, then I’m all in—flipping the script on unrealistic expectations tied to my roles as a wife and mother.

So far, my thirties have taught me valuable lessons, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead. Here are six things I’ve let go of without a second thought:

  1. Self-Censorship
    Growing up, I was told, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” That advice stifles authentic expression, especially for young girls. In today’s world, where negativity can thrive, I refuse to remain silent. My voice is significant, and I won’t hold back for the sake of someone else’s comfort.
  2. Tolerating Mansplaining
    I’m done with men explaining things to me in condescending tones. Whether at work or home, I encounter this far too often. It’s time to demand respect. I’m not here to be belittled; I’m a knowledgeable woman who deserves acknowledgment.
  3. Neglecting My Own Needs
    I’m committed to enjoying life. That means indulging in my favorite foods (not just diet options), sipping wine, and taking time for myself, whether it’s a night out with friends or investing in those luxurious, comfy shoes. My needs are just as valid as anyone else’s, and I refuse to push them to the bottom of my priority list.
  4. Dieting
    Unless a healthcare professional advises a dietary change, I’m no longer obsessed with my appearance. I’m done worrying about what others think when I wear a bathing suit. And just to be clear, no one, especially not some twenty-something, is going to dictate what I can wear.
  5. Unfriending Toxicity
    I won’t hesitate to unfriend negative influences on social media. Whether it’s sharing offensive memes or engaging in petty arguments, if you’re not contributing positively to my feed, you’re out. I’m done tiptoeing around feelings—my mental health comes first.
  6. Calling Out Bad Behavior
    It took me a while to master this, but I’ve learned the importance of addressing poor behavior in kids. If your child is being unkind to mine, I will speak up. Likewise, I welcome feedback if my child misbehaves. We’re all in this together, raising decent humans.

Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered strong women who exude power effortlessly. I realized that this strength originates from within, and I can cultivate my own. Now, I am one of those women who carries my power proudly.
