You Think You’re Tired Now? Just Wait

As an expecting mother, you’ve likely been advised to “sleep now while you still can.” Seriously, who believes you can stockpile sleep like it’s a commodity? It’s not like you can catch more than a few hours of shut-eye when your 8-month-old fetus is busy staging a kickboxing match on your bladder, right?

Once you become a new mom, the well-meaning advice shifts to “sleep when the baby sleeps.” Ha! If only it were that simple. We’ve all heard the clichés, and honestly, we’re here to tell you: they don’t prepare you for the reality of parenthood.

I stepped into motherhood knowing that tiredness would be part of the package. My husband and I braced ourselves for the exhaustion that comes with caring for a newborn. And yes, we survived—barely. We might not have had a clue what we were doing, but we made it through.

The early days were a blur of feeding, diaper changes, and catnaps. Yet somehow, we managed to squeeze in hot meals and even showers. We took strolls around the neighborhood, typically during our baby’s wild witching hour. We were tired, sure, but we were also somehow managing to feel almost normal.

Not long after our son arrived, we hosted a small gathering at our home. Several guests remarked, “Wow, you look good! You actually look rested!” Little did they know, I looked “rested” because taking care of a newborn pales in comparison to the relentless energy required to keep up with a crawling 6-month-old.

Just a few weeks before Christmas, I found myself on the floor wrapping gifts while my son enjoyed some tummy time. Suddenly, he pushed himself up onto his hands and knees, rocking back and forth. My husband and I exchanged glances—something was happening.

Before we knew it, our son was scooting across the carpet, having a grand time with the wrapping paper. Our Christmas transformed into a whirlwind of sweeping up pine needles, moving ornaments out of reach, and rewrapping presents.

As the weeks passed, that army crawl quickly evolved into a full-blown hands-and-knees adventure. One day, I was in the kitchen, thinking he was safe, when I turned to see him climbing the stairs. I couldn’t believe my eyes as he pulled himself up, step by step, without stopping until he reached the landing. Panic set in as we realized this newly mobile child was eager to explore everything—from the stairs to the fireplace, and, yes, even the dining room table.

Now I’m not just tired; I’m utterly exhausted. The once manageable tiredness has escalated. My little one is now trying to walk, and each day brings new challenges and fresh reasons for sleepless nights.
