Karla Jensen recently experienced the all-too-common ordeal of mom-shaming while flying with her little ones. It’s a situation many parents know too well: you can only hope your kids sleep through the takeoff, but eventually, they wake up and demand snacks, crayons, and screens. In those moments, you might find yourself wishing for a private jet to escape the noise.
“I was traveling with my toddler and my nine-month-old baby,” Karla shares. “After waking up at 4 AM, my daughter started making some playful noises to entertain her younger sibling, and the woman behind us commented, ‘Is that absolutely necessary?’ My husband promptly replied, ‘Well, there are plenty of things that three-year-olds do that aren’t absolutely necessary.’”
Known for her role as the sharp and fierce lawyer in the hit ABC show How to Get Away with Murder, Karla is not one to back down when it comes to her kids, Gianna and Luka. The pandemic has only heightened the struggles of traveling with children, and Karla found herself feeling frustrated by the lack of empathy from fellow passengers.
“I channeled my inner mama bear and confronted her,” Karla admits. “I shouldn’t have said it, but I asked her if it was really necessary to dye her hair black and wear those ugly boots.”
Karla is also making waves on the ABC sitcom Home Economics, where she plays a struggling writer’s wife. She’s excited to bring humor to topics like motherhood and the messy realities of parenting. “I didn’t want to do another TV show at first, but when I heard my character would discuss motherhood and the struggles that come with it, I was all in,” she explains.
While filming during COVID, Karla discovered the joys of a quick nap and how to adapt her parenting style. “At the start of the pandemic, I was a ‘no screens’ mom, but that quickly changed. Now, at least my kids are watching Dory in Spanish!”
Karla emphasizes the impact of the pandemic on women, particularly how it has affected their roles in the workforce. While her show provides a lighthearted look at financial struggles, she acknowledges the real-life issues many families face today.
“I grew up in a household where finances were openly discussed, and I find it strange that so many people avoid talking about money matters,” she says. “It’s such an important part of life, yet it remains a taboo topic.”
