Tell Me I’m Not Alone in This Parenting Chaos

As a parent, my life often feels like a whirlwind. My little ones and I bounce between swim lessons, storytime, and the playground. I inevitably show up looking like a hot mess, with my 7-month-old strapped to my hip, a couple of bulging bags slung over my forearm, and my 3-year-old hanging onto my tattered dress.

No matter how much I carry, I seem to be missing the essentials. I can’t help but notice other moms effortlessly managing their perfectly organized diaper bags, styled hair, and children dressed like they walked off a magazine cover. I watch them hand their toddlers sippy cups filled with fresh juice, and I feel a strange mix of admiration and envy. Their poise makes me wonder if I’m the only one on this chaotic parenting rollercoaster.

Am I the only mom who can’t keep up with body hair? Long showers feel like a luxury, and shaving? Forget it. I can’t even keep the stray hairs on my face in check.

Am I the only one who has had to sneak in quick moments of intimacy in the living room while our little one napped in our bed? We recently moved to a bigger house, so hopefully those days are behind us.

Am I alone in having feet that resemble something out of a caveman movie? My heels are cracked and peeling, making me hesitant to get too cozy with my husband for fear of inflicting an accidental injury. I’ve just started applying lotion again, which feels like a huge leap towards self-care, but my feet? They’re just going to have to wait.

Do you also apologize to anyone who enters your car? Mine is a disaster zone. It takes me three trips to load everything I need, but when it’s time to leave, I just grab the kids and rush them to bed, leaving behind wrappers, coffee mugs, toys, and once, even a dirty diaper that marinated in the heat overnight.

Am I the only one who thinks, “Why bother cleaning up the toys?” They’ll just be scattered all over again once the kids wake up anyway.

Have you also given up on wearing jewelry and nail polish? My earrings get yanked on, and I don’t want to risk a torn lobe. As for nail polish, I can’t find the time to apply it, let alone remove it when it inevitably chips.

Am I the only one who has left the house without essential mom supplies? If my baby has a blowout, I might just have to ask a stranger for an extra diaper or wipe. And don’t even ask about the contents of my diaper bag; it’s a chaotic mess. I usually don’t remember to bring water for my 3-year-old until he pipes up from the backseat, “I’m thirsty!”

Do you also panic about whether you left the oven on after leaving the house? I sometimes wonder if my husband would even be shocked if I burned the place down by accident. I’ve driven back home more than once to check.

Do you feel like a hot mess, too? I’m really trying to get my act together. Maybe I should look for a coach to help me, or perhaps I’ll just browse Pinterest for some inspiration later.
