20 Surprising Experiences I’ve Had as a Dad to Daughters

As the proud father of two daughters, Mia, age 7, and Lily, age 2, I quickly learned that parenting little girls is a wild ride. With one sister who was more like a second mom to me, I honestly had no idea what to expect when it came to daily life with my daughters. Little did I know, their charm and persuasive powers would lead me to do things I once swore I’d never do. While I’m not the most masculine guy around, I’ve found myself in some pretty surprising situations, including playing with makeup and baby dolls. Here’s a glimpse into my new reality:

  1. Hit the pool sporting bright turquoise toenails.
  2. Mastered the art of removing lipstick and sparkly eye shadow from my face.
  3. Had a long debate with my daughter about getting a cat, only to ultimately buy one after months of saying no.
  4. Learned to communicate in puppy, kitty, and princess languages—none of which will help my career.
  5. Caught myself humming along to some catchy My Little Pony tunes.
  6. Experienced a mix of dread and anger when I saw my daughter holding a little boy’s hand.
  7. Had barrettes placed in my beard as part of a princess makeover.
  8. Realized how easily my daughters can charm me with their dimples and sweet “I love you, Daddy” phrases.
  9. Swaddled a baby doll, rocked it to sleep, and kissed it goodnight.
  10. Memorized the lyrics to “Let It Go” without even trying.
  11. Found myself singing “Let It Go” while driving to work alone at 6 a.m., the song just won’t leave my head.
  12. Shed tears because my little girl was upset.
  13. Dressed a stuffed panda in a princess costume and hosted a tea party for it.
  14. Truly grasped the meaning of “all women are someone’s daughter.”
  15. Kept my composure when my daughter declared me a “meany head” for cutting her toast into squares instead of triangles.
  16. Faced the reality that sometimes I just don’t understand what my little girl is going through.
  17. Used princess metaphors to teach lessons on everything from kindness to hygiene.
  18. Recognized the importance of telling my girls that they are strong and smart, in addition to being beautiful.
  19. Strolled through the grocery store with two princesses in a cart, discussing our shopping list in a British accent.
  20. Looked at my daughters, yearning for a future where they won’t face limitations just because they’re women, while also feeling anxious about whether that future will ever come.

This list could go on forever, but it showcases just how much children can transform a parent. My experiences with these little girls have undoubtedly changed me in ways I never imagined possible.
